Notice: **Waste Motor Oil and Antifreeze will no longer be accepted for recycling at the Transfer Station. Waste Oil and Antifreeze can be disposed at HAZWASTE Central on Sargent Drive on Saturdays from mid May 12 until late October . There will be no charge for disposal.**
Although the town has no public rubbish pick-up service; the town does maintain the transfer station, where garbage is received and compacted before being trucked to a plant in Hartford, CT. The transfer station is for the use of residents and private contractors who collect trash from Guilford and Madison properties. Disposal of Municipal Solid Waste (trash) and Bulky Waste is by weight. Bulky Waste includes demolition debris, construction materials, furniture, etc.
The fee for disposal of trash and bulky waste is $7 per 100lbs ($7 minimum)
The Transfer Station only accepts credit/debit cards, local check and tickets, which can be purchased at the Guilford Town Clerk’s Office or Madison Building Department. Cash is not accepted.
The Transfer Station offers many opportunities for recycling. We participate in single stream recycling of paper, cardboard, acceptable plastics and glass. There is no charge for single stream recycling at the Transfer Station

The town does not charge residents who drop off fewer than seven televisions or electronics at the Recycling Center. A wide array of electronics can be recycled, please check the link Electronics Recylcing Information above on this page.
Metal can also be recycled for free at the Transfer Station. Please check in with the recycling attendant if you have questions if something can go in the metal recycling bin.
Mattresses and box springs can also be recycled for free at the Transfer Station. There is a large bin just past the recycling center for these items.
Appliances such as freezers, refrigerators, stoves, washers, dryers, window A/C units and dehumidifiers can be recycled at the transfer station at a cost of $10 per item.
Tires are also recycled at the following cost:
Small tires (motorcycle/tractor) $3 each
Car tires $5 each
Large truck tires $15 each
The Town of Guilford files reports about annual waste and recycling with CT DEEP. These reports are filed at the Engineering Department and available for review if anyone is interested.
There are containers at the front of the Transfer Station for collecting clothing for various organizations.
There is a container at the the front of the Transfer Station amongst the clothing bins for used books. However, books that are in SALEABLE condition can be dropped off at the Guilford Free Library any time during library hours. “Saleable” books are contemporary and vintage books that are: NOT dirty, moldy, sticky, chewed, stained, browned, torn, underlined, or highlighted. And please, no magazines or videos.
A receipt is always provided for your tax returns.
Donations are sold by the Friends of the Guilford Free Library to benefit programs and acquisitions of the Library.
Brush and leaf is located on Sullivan Drive. The hours of operation are Tuesday, Thursday and Saturday 8:30 a.m. to 3:15 p.m. It is not open during inclement weather. Cash is not accepted. You can pay by check or buy a Brush & Leaf Trip ticket at Town Hall South.
**(Anything larger than 3″ in diameter will not be accepted)**
There is no charge for disposal of leaves in biodegradable paper bags. The charge for disposal of brush is based on the size of the vehicle delivering it. Leaves may be deposited at the site on Sullivan Drive, which is off of Goose Lane, at no charge.
