ESTABLISHED: Established by ordinance adopted by the Board of Selectmen February 21, 1984. Alternates established by ordinance adopted by Special Town Meeting February 13, 1986.
CHARGE/DUTIES: The Shellfish Commission is charged with the managing and being in charge of all the shellfisheries and shellfish grounds lying within the Town including all rivers, inland waters and flats adjacent to all beaches and waters within the limits and marine bounds of the Town.
ELECTED/APPOINTED: Appointed by the Board of Selectmen upon recommendation of the Town Committees.
MEMBERSHIP: Seven regular members. One alternate member.
LENGTH OF TERM: Four-year term.
MEETING DATE/TIME/PLACE: Regular meetings are held on the second Wednesday of the month, 7:30 p.m. at the Town Hall.
EXPERIENCE AND/OR INTEREST NECESSARY/PREFERRED TO BE A MEMBER: Members should have an interest in shellfishing and at least limited knowledge of the waters of Guilford as well as some familiarity of boats. Since members are frequently asked to help with the transplanting of shellfish, they should be in reasonably good physical condition. An environmental and ecological interest and/or background is also helpful.
