ESTABLISHED: Established by ordinance adopted by Special Town Meeting, July 24, 1962.

CHARGE/DUTIES: The Parks and Recreation Commission is charged with the control, development, management, operation, and maintenance of a system of parks, recreational areas and facilities, and with the supervision and maintenance of playgrounds, playfields, bathing beaches, recreation center, and other Parks and Recreation activities, areas and facilities. The Commission has the power to expend funds appropriated by the town for recreational purposes and/or park purposes by private individuals or organizations. In the performance of these duties the commission has the power to employ a Director.

ELECTED/APPOINTED: Appointed by the Board of Selectmen upon recommendation of Town Committees.

MEMBERSHIP: Nine regular members. No alternate members. Officers include Chairman, Vice-Chairman, and Secretary. Sub-committees are formed as needed.

LENGTH OF TERM: As per 1962 ordinance members were appointed for three-year terms. As per Town Charter effective December 2, 1993, all terms are now four years.

MEETING DATE/TIME/PLACE: Regular meetings are held on the first Monday of the month, 6:30 p.m., in the Nathanel B. Greene Community Center.

EXPERIENCE AND/OR INTEREST: Members should have an interest in recreational programs and facilities for Guilford citizens of all ages and a willingness to serve and take an active part in the Commission meetings and budget meetings.
