ESTABLISHED: Established by ordinance adopted by the Board of Selectmen December 21, 1987.

CHARGE/DUTIES: The Historic District Commission is charged with administering the provisions of Sections 7-147a to 7-147k of the Connecticut General Statutes including making periodic reports to the legislative body, providing information to property owners and others involving the preservation of the district, suggesting pertinent legislation, initiating planning and zoning proposals, commenting on applications for zoning variances, rendering advice and furnishing information and assistance in connection with any capital improvement program involving historic districts.

ELECTED/APPOINTED: Appointed by the Board of Selectmen upon recommendation by the Commission.

MEMBERSHIP: Five regular members. Three alternate members. Officers include Chairman, Assistant Chairman and Secretary. There are not standing subcommittees, however, when a Certificate of Appropriateness is issued it is custom to appoint two members to work with the applicant.

LENGTH OF TERM: As per state statute all members are appointed to five-year terms.

MEETING DATE/TIME/PLACE: Regular meetings are held on the third Wednesday of every month at 7 p.m. in the Community Center.

EXPERIENCE AND/OR INTEREST NECESSARY/PREFERRED TO BE A MEMBER: Members should preferably have significant experience in the operation of the Town so as to properly exercise the duties of a commissioner. Special skills such as knowledge of preservation of properties, architecture, or law are also desirable.
